Charles F. Lee papers, 1864-1865.

Consisting of ten letters to his mother, Mrs. Artemas Lee, Templeton, Mass., information on Lee's U.S. Army service, and historical sketch of the 55th Mass. Infantry; including letters, 10 and 11 May 1864, Pittsfield, [Mass.], describing a bullet wound to his leg for which he was receiving medical treatment. Letters, 6 Feb. - 30 May 1865, re his U.S. military service in South Carolina, including 6 Feb. 1865, Steamer Louisburg off Folly Island, noting that he had been returned to active service at Hilton Head but had been sent on expedition to Edisto Island and was being redeployed to James Island in anticipation of a fight. Letter, 11 Feb. [18]65, Steamer Cosmopolitan off Folly Is[land], describing a battle on James Island and commending African-American troops of the 55th Massachusetts for valor in battle; and 19 Mar. [1865], James Island, re two incidents in which African-Americans had run away after stealing from him. Letter, 28 Mar. 1865, re burial ceremonies for remains of members of the 55th Massachusetts killed in battle on James Island in July 1864 and noting that he was shipping northward a rifle captured from a Texan and a sword from the Revolutionary War era; 19 Apr. 1865, reacting to news of the fall of Richmond, Lee's surrender, and Lincoln's assassination; and 3 May [18]65, Camp Hallowell near Charleston, reporting orders to march to Orangeburg and news of the surrender of Joseph E. Johnston.
